In-Country Orientation

Volunteer Participant Orientation & Training

Global Service Corps believes that not only is it important to prepare those volunteering abroad for their GSC Service-Learning Program, it is also essential to prepare them for life in their new homes and communities while in Cambodia. This is truly one of the aspects to our international volunteer program that sets us apart from other volunteer abroad experiences.

For every program, orientation and training includes pick-up at the Phnom Penh International Airport by a GSC representative and transportation to a hotel in Phnom Penh where all volunteers stay at the start of their program. Orientation and training starts Sunday afternoon with the GSC In-Country Coordinator and Assistant Program Coordinator.  This includes review of the programs of each volunteer participant, cultural orientation, an initial Khmer language training, visit to local shops and areas of interest, and a concluding welcome dinner

Starting Monday, volunteers are taken on sightseeing trips to some of the famous sites in Phnom Penh, including the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, the National Museum, and other important historical and local sites.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, orientation continues with Khmer language lessons; introduction to Cambodia’s history, including the Khmer Rouge period; visit to historical wat and introduction to Buddhism; visits to the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Killing Fields; and preparations for assignments at host organizations.

Orientation concludes with placements at host organizations on Wednesday evening or Thursday morning.
