September 3 - December 16, 2012 as well as the Spring Semester Program which will take place from
January 14 - April 28, 2013. The focus of this service-learning experience is for students to expand their own knowledge while at the same time helping to educate local community members in HIV/AIDS prevention and rural sustainable agriculture. Students will have the opportunity to become fully immersed in Tanzanian culture as they live, work, learn, and play among local Tanzanian families, staff, and students in both rural and urban settings.

The 15 Credit Semester Program offers
practical experience serving some of Tanzania's most vulnerable populations as well as an
in-depth academic component. During the initial three weeks of the program, students will receive orientation and classroom training, providing a
foundation in African Culture, Public Health, and Community Development. After this academic preparation, students will complete nine weeks of field work in the areas of HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention and Sustainable Agriculture, serving as training assistants in community workshops. GSC works with community groups serving widows, orphans, Maasai and other indigenous people. As part of GSC's HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Program, community trainings target youth and adults with the ultimate goal of
mitigating the spread of HIV/AIDS in a sustainable manner. Students also receive training in GSC's Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security Program, including hands-on experience in innovative agriculture techniques that aim to
increase food production while alleviating the main causes of food losses. The final three weeks of the program will focus on the Service Learning Capstone Course in which students will attend additional class lectures and prepare their final papers and presentations that will highlight the
interconnectedness of sustainable food production, income generation, and overall health and wellness.
The 9-Week 9 Credit
Summer Integrated Service-Learning Program is designed for individuals with multiple programmatic interests. This program allows students to participate in two GSC Program areas providing a cross-sectoral response to development in Tanzania. Beginning on
June 4, 2012, students will focus during the initial four weeks on the
GSC HIV/AIDS Prevention Program. The first week students participate in the cultural orientation and technical training and the following three weeks assist with HIV/AIDS prevention community training. Students help staff the annual
HIV/AIDS Peer Education and Life Skills Day Camp during weeks two and three and assist GSC staff with additional HIV/AIDS awareness activities during week four. During week five, students receive their second week of technical training in sustainable agriculture and food security as part of the
GSC Sustainable Agriculture and Food Security Program. Weeks six through nine provide opportunities for students to participate as training assistants in sustainable agriculture and HIV/AIDS prevention community workshops. Students will also assist the 36 GSC Tanzanian staff members with hands-on innovative food security field work and trainings.
