Based on the success of the English for Life Day Camps, GSC has expanded its scope to provide follow-up HIV/AIDS prevention and education assistance in secondary schools that have participated in the camps. GSC volunteers work with local teachers to plan lessons and activities for 7th to 12th grade students, providing them with basic knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention methods. All lessons are conducted in English, giving students the opportunity to practice their English skills.
Prior to departure, all GSC volunteers are provided two manuals to reference during their HIV/AIDS
Education Program. The Teaching English in Thailand and HIV/AIDS Prevention Training manuals are valuable resources for Thailand volunteers to utilize before and during their project. The HIV/AIDS Prevention Training manual provides a technical overview of the virus, its transmission and progression, and prevention measures. The manual also includes sample lesson plans that effectively integrate HIV/AIDS education with English language training. Additionally, GSC volunteers undergo a 6-day in-country orientation that includes an introduction to teaching English as a foreign language and a technical overview of HIV and AIDS within a Thai context.
Volunteers may participate in the GSC HIV/AIDS Prevention and Education Program in a Two-Week, Short-Term, Long-Term, and Internship programs, or in combination with another program as part of an Integrated Program.
***GSC is in the process of evaluating its HIV/AIDS Education and Prevention Program in order better serve the community and provide a mutually beneficial experience for volunteers. Therefore, this program currently is not being offered in Thailand, but scheduled to resume in the Summer of 2009. Please check back with GSC early in 2009 for more details.
